You can make an Arduino perform certain actions depending on the types of audio it receives. Sound is broken down into seven frequency bands and the peak level for each band can be read. These levels can be displayed as a graphic equalizer, like you would see on an audio system or a car stereo. This task can be performed in software as a Fourier analysis, but this shield does it for you very quickly.
